Flying a drone in Switzerland

Switzerland is not in the EU, but it has applied the EU drone rules (Regulation (EU) 2019/947) since 1 January 2023 through its air transport agreement with the EU. Operators of drones weighing 250 g or more, or carrying a camera, register with the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA). FOCA publishes the Swiss UAS geographical zones as open data, and the file also includes a few zones in Liechtenstein. Zones around airports and airfields, nature reserves and other protected areas each state their own conditions: select a zone to read them.

How to read the map

Each zone is coloured by what the publisher says it means for a flight. Select one to see its altitude limits, schedule and the authority to contact.

  • Prohibited — The source states that flight is not permitted here.
  • Authorization required — Flight may be possible with prior authorization from the named authority.
  • Coordination required — The source states that no authorization is needed, but the operator must coordinate before flying.
  • Information only — The source classes this as advisory: a hazard or activity to be aware of, not a restriction on flight.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to register my drone in Switzerland?
Yes, if your drone weighs 250 g or more, or carries a camera (unless it is a toy): as an operator you register with the Federal Office of Civil Aviation (FOCA) and put your operator number on every drone you fly.
How high can I fly a drone in Switzerland?
In the open category, no higher than 120 m above the ground. A UAS geographical zone can set a lower limit, or prohibit flight altogether: select a zone on the map to see its limits.
Does the Swiss map cover Liechtenstein?
Yes. FOCA's dataset includes a few UAS geographical zones in Liechtenstein, and GeoPilot shows them on the Switzerland map.
Is this map run by the authority, or an authorization to fly?
Neither. GeoPilot is an independent planning tool, not affiliated with or endorsed by the national publisher; it shows the zones that publisher releases, synced automatically. It is not an authorization, and the official source always wins: confirm there, and get any permission a zone requires, before you fly.

Data

  • Airspace data is published by the national authorities of each country covered. GeoPilot is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them.
  • View sources and freshness

GeoPilot is an independent planning tool and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any aviation authority. It shows data published by national authorities, which may be incomplete, out of date or simplified in processing, and it does not authorize any flight. Always check the authority's own publication and current NOTAMs before flying.
