Flying a drone in Latvia

Latvia applies the EU drone rules (Regulation (EU) 2019/947). Operators of drones weighing 250 g or more, or carrying a camera, register with the Civil Aviation Agency. Latvia's UAS geographical zones are published by LGS, the national air navigation service provider, and the legally binding version is the official map at airspace.lv/drones. Many zones are temporary, some last only a few hours, and several require you to notify an airport before and after the flight: select a zone to read its conditions.

How to read the map

Each zone is coloured by what the publisher says it means for a flight. Select one to see its altitude limits, schedule and the authority to contact.

  • Prohibited — The source states that flight is not permitted here.
  • Authorization required — Flight may be possible with prior authorization from the named authority.
  • Coordination required — The source states that no authorization is needed, but the operator must coordinate before flying.
  • Information only — The source classes this as advisory: a hazard or activity to be aware of, not a restriction on flight.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to register my drone in Latvia?
Yes, if your drone weighs 250 g or more, or carries a camera (unless it is a toy): as an operator you register with the Civil Aviation Agency and put your operator number on every drone you fly.
How high can I fly a drone in Latvia?
In the open category, no higher than 120 m above the ground. A UAS geographical zone can set a lower limit, or prohibit flight altogether: select a zone on the map to see its limits.
Why do drone zones in Latvia change so often?
Latvia publishes temporary zones alongside permanent ones, and some last only a few hours. GeoPilot syncs them from LGS and hides the ones that have ended; on the day you fly, check LGS's own publication, which is the legally binding one.
Is this map run by the authority, or an authorization to fly?
Neither. GeoPilot is an independent planning tool, not affiliated with or endorsed by the national publisher; it shows the zones that publisher releases, synced automatically. It is not an authorization, and the official source always wins: confirm there, and get any permission a zone requires, before you fly.
