Flying a drone in Portugal

Portugal applies the EU drone rules (Regulation (EU) 2019/947). Operators of drones weighing 250 g or more, or carrying a camera, register with the national civil aviation authority, ANAC. ANAC's UAS geographical zones, the official and legally binding publication, cover airports, military areas and protected natural areas such as Natura 2000 sites. ANAC updates the file roughly every quarter, and it does not include short-notice temporary restrictions, so check current NOTAMs and ANAC's own map before you fly.

How to read the map

Each zone is coloured by what the publisher says it means for a flight. Select one to see its altitude limits, schedule and the authority to contact.

  • Prohibited — The source states that flight is not permitted here.
  • Authorization required — Flight may be possible with prior authorization from the named authority.
  • Coordination required — The source states that no authorization is needed, but the operator must coordinate before flying.
  • Information only — The source classes this as advisory: a hazard or activity to be aware of, not a restriction on flight.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to register my drone in Portugal?
Yes, if your drone weighs 250 g or more, or carries a camera (unless it is a toy): as an operator you register with ANAC, the national civil aviation authority and put your operator number on every drone you fly.
How high can I fly a drone in Portugal?
In the open category, no higher than 120 m above the ground. A UAS geographical zone can set a lower limit, or prohibit flight altogether: select a zone on the map to see its limits.
Does the map show temporary drone restrictions in Portugal?
No. ANAC's geozone file, which GeoPilot syncs, is updated roughly quarterly and carries no short-notice restrictions. Check current NOTAMs and ANAC's own map before you fly.
Is this map run by the authority, or an authorization to fly?
Neither. GeoPilot is an independent planning tool, not affiliated with or endorsed by the national publisher; it shows the zones that publisher releases, synced automatically. It is not an authorization, and the official source always wins: confirm there, and get any permission a zone requires, before you fly.

  • Airspace data is published by the national authorities of each country covered. GeoPilot is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them.
  • View sources and freshness

GeoPilot is an independent planning tool and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any aviation authority.
