Flying a drone in Australia

In Australia, drones are regulated by the Civil Aviation Safety Authority (CASA). Under its standard conditions you keep the drone in your line of sight, fly no higher than 120 m above the ground and stay at least 30 m from other people. This map shows a different layer: the drone rules set by the managers of national parks and other protected areas, and for correctional facilities, compiled in the Australian Government's Local Drone Rules map. Select an area to read its rule for recreational and commercial flying. It does not show airports, controlled airspace or restricted, prohibited and danger areas, so check CASA's Can I fly there? tool or a CASA-verified app before you fly.

How to read the map

Each zone is coloured by what the publisher says it means for a flight. Select one to see its altitude limits, schedule and the authority to contact.

  • Prohibited — The source states that flight is not permitted here.
  • Authorization required — Flight may be possible with prior authorization from the named authority.
  • Coordination required — The source states that no authorization is needed, but the operator must coordinate before flying.
  • Information only — The source classes this as advisory: a hazard or activity to be aware of, not a restriction on flight.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need to register my drone in Australia?
Not to fly for fun. If you fly for work you must register the drone and hold a licence or operator accreditation. See CASA's registration requirements.
How high can I fly a drone in Australia?
No higher than 120 m above the ground under CASA's standard conditions, and at least 30 m from other people.
Does this map show airports and controlled airspace?
No. It shows the drone rules set by managers of national parks, protected areas and correctional facilities. Check CASA's Can I fly there? tool or a CASA-verified app for airspace.
Is this map run by the authority, or an authorization to fly?
Neither. GeoPilot is an independent planning tool, not affiliated with or endorsed by the national publisher; it shows the zones that publisher releases, synced automatically. It is not an authorization, and the official source always wins: confirm there, and get any permission a zone requires, before you fly.

Data

  • Airspace data is published by the national authorities of each country covered. GeoPilot is not affiliated with or endorsed by any of them.
  • View sources and freshness

GeoPilot is an independent planning tool and is not affiliated with or endorsed by any aviation authority. It shows data published by national authorities, which may be incomplete, out of date or simplified in processing, and it does not authorize any flight. Always check the authority's own publication and current NOTAMs before flying.
