In October 2026 Norway's publisher restructured its drone-zone file, and the number of volumes in GeoPilot's Norway data went from 5,293 to 1,810. A count like that tells you the file was cut differently, not how much land is restricted, which is why GeoPilot does not accept a change of that size without a check.
What changed
Norway's drone zones are published by Luftfartstilsynet through dronesoner.no as an ED-269 file, re-issued as a monthly snapshot under NLOD 2.0. GeoPilot reads the newest file from that page and normalizes it into its own database. The October file describes far fewer volumes than the one before it.
- Before: 5,293 volumes in GeoPilot's data.
- After: 1,810 volumes.
- Source: the publisher's own ED-269 download.
A single protected area can be published as one volume or as hundreds; one nature reserve in the earlier file was split into 265. A volume is a unit of publishing, not of airspace.
Why a drop like this is checked
A sync that suddenly loads a third of the usual data looks exactly like a broken download. GeoPilot therefore refuses to publish a dataset whose size moves past a plausibility limit and keeps the previous one until the limit has been reviewed. The limit is set per source, so confirming that Norway's restructure was real did not loosen it for any other country.
How to read a drop like this
- Check the publisher's note. A restructure is usually announced; a broken export is not.
- Compare area, not count. Volumes say how the publisher cut the geometry, not how much is restricted.
- Look at the date. The publisher states that fixed-zone data is updated manually, with no guaranteed cycle.
GeoPilot is an independent planning tool, not the authority's publication. Before you fly in Norway, check the zone on Luftfartstilsynet's own service, and do not treat an absence in GeoPilot's data as a clearance.
What to do as a pilot
Nothing changes about how you check a flight. Open the Norway map, tap the place you plan to fly and read what each source says. The Norway drone-rules guide covers the national rules, including the registration requirement for some sensors, and drone geo-zones explained covers how to read a zone.
